Afro-pop/ afro-beat music is growing and reaching new grounds internationally every day. We have Wiz kid who was nominated and won a BET award for the best international act: Africa 2017. We have Sarkordie who has won BET award international act: Africa 2012 and nominated for the same BET award category in 2014 and 2015. SOME (not all) of the many popular names in the African music industry are, Davido, Tiwa savage, Yemi Alade, flavour, patoranking, runtown, Diamond paltnumz, Tekno and of course the legendary 2face. Which leads me to my questions. Where are the women of the industry? Why aren’t they breaking barriers like our men? Do we tend to support the men more? or is the industry made harder for African women to succeed? Don’t get me wrong, there are many African female vocalist, but they aren’t recognized outside their country or not known well. Yet i’ve heard many male musicians from different African countries. I think that it’s time for us to recognize the women of the industry. There are MANY underrated African female vocalist who make great music, but due to the lack of attention and popularity, their work isn’t recognized internationally. I do, however, believe that they have to work harder, especially with marketing to get their material heard. Whatever the reason may be, I am ready to see our sisters stand by our brother’s hand in hand in dominating and bringing African music to the world.
